How Disc Decompression Therapy Works
A gentle, controlled, and very specific mechanical traction is applied to the spine. When doing so, a negative pressure on the disc is created and allows an influx of oxygen, water, and nutrients back into the disc, thereby allowing the disc to heal. In the case of a disc herniation or bulge, the disc can be drawn back in and relieve pressure off a pinched nerve.
A Typical Treatment
For the low back, the patient lies comfortably on her back with a set of padded straps snug around the hips and another set around the lower chest. For the neck, the patient lies comfortably on her back with a pair of soft rubber pads behind the neck. In both instances, patients will feel a gentle and gradual pulling sensation as the spine is distracted. Many patients enjoy the treatment because it often provides immediate pain relief.
Most treatments last 15-20 minutes. 12 sessions is the minimum number of treatments required for a disc injury, especially with lower leg and arm pain.
